Ek werk tans in eerste-en-besigheidsklas.
Volg jul drome – niks is onmoontlik!
I grew up on a farm, near the small town of Patensie, in the Eastern Cape where I attended Nico Malan High School. I’d always had a love for the outdoors and sport specifically. Going out and being on the farm was something very close to my heart but being on the sport field with my friends from school and boarding house was the ultimate way of spending my days at Nico Malan High School.
At school I was passionate about rugby and athletics. My rugby career at high school only kicked off in Gr11 when I made the 1st XV and ended up playing 44 games for the first team. I never made the provincial side at high school level but went on to secure a contract at the Sharks academy and played Sharks U/19 and U/21. My sport career continued at varsity where I played over 80 games for the Maties rugby club over a course of a few years whilst completing my studies.
After graduating, I started working in our family business, which took me back to the Eastern Cape. It is also here that at the age of 24 that I had my car accident.
I only took my eyes off the road for a second and lost control of the car and within a few seconds my life had changed. I was paralysed from the chest down.
Coming from a small school such as Nico Malan where we were the underdogs on the sport field on a regular basis, I learned from a young age that we should never stop fighting for what we believe in. That we can be whoever and whatever we want to be in life and not be defined by what other people think or say of us.
The mentality and work ethic that I have learned at Nico Malan has helped me a lot to achieve great things on the sport field and also in life in general. It helped me to stand up from my circumstances and to keep going even when all then odds are against you.
Never did I imagine that the boy from the small town in the Eastern Cape and who came from Nico Malan High School would hold 5 national titles and have Springbok colours in al 5 sport disciplines as a Paralympic athlete.

In looking back at my Life journey, one of the key conclusions I came to is THANK YOU to my Alma Mater Nico Malan, for the life lessons you taught me for 5 years of my life. I am very fortunate for the journey my life has taken and in looking back, I can honestly say that I do not have any regrets. Why? Not only because I was fortunate, always try to be positive, had good luck, things just happened for me, hard work, compulsory military service, a Higher Hand which protected and blessed me, university education, dedication and commitment – not at all; those were all part of my journey, but between 1974 – 1978 the values, respect and lessons learned at Nico Malan and the role teachers played were equally important, if not more important of what transpired in my life after 1978 – “be fair to everyone and one will bear the fruit!”.
During my career and from a very young adult age I was placed in numerous leadership roles; the introduction of how to be a leader was initially laid as Head Boy of Stulting Primary School, furthered by the privilege to be the Nico Malan Head Boy in 1978 and captaining the 1st Rugby and 1st Cricket Teams in the same year. Respect for myself and respect for others always remained a key driver in in my life – thank you Nico Malan!!
After finishing my studies and obtaining two degrees at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria, and completing my 2 years conscription, I commenced a career in personnel management in the then Department of Manpower (now called Department of Labour) and within a very short period of employment I was appointed as Private Secretary to the Minister of Manpower, fulfilling Parliamentary duties. Due to the previous political dispensation, our Country was suspended as a Member State of the International Labour Organization (ILO) – a United Nations Agency – way back in 1966. With changes in the Country on the horizon in the late eighties and with the Government looking at possibilities of re-admission into the international fraternity, also the ILO, I was sent to Geneva, Switzerland as Labour Attache, at the young age of 28 yrs old, to represent the Government and to commence with re-negotiating the RSA back as a Member State of the ILO. It was not easy; being a government official of the previous government trying to pave the way for the Country to be re-admitted as a Member State of the ILO – which was achieved in 1992 when Mr Nelson Mandela visited the ILO to open the Annual Conference with South Africa re-admitted as a Member; during the process even arguing with Cabinet Ministers who initially did not want to listen to reason, but finally I could persuade them. A very proud moment in my career – the 3 most important things which helped me in achieving this were: respect for others, hard work & dedication and leadership – thank you again to Nico Malan.
After my 4 year term of service in Switzerland, I served in many roles in the private and public sectors, climbing the ladder to senior positions, but never forgetting the values learned at Nico Malan, which always had a very special place in my heart. It was a sad moment that I was not able to attend the 10 year class reunion in 1988, but I arrived in Switzerland shortly before the reunion; I vowed to never miss a class reunion again – not only to see my class mates and good friends, but because I will forever treasure my association with my Alma Mater – and I have attended the 20yr, 30yr and this year the 40yr reunion – coming all the way from the USA.
The past 20 years was also very exciting as far as my working career is concerned. As the Executive Director of the Clothing Manufacturing Association I was the national chief negotiator on behalf of the clothing employers, also representing chambers of Business South Africa and doing presentations to Parliament regarding labour legislation reforms. I needed another challenge outside my career of labour relations/human resources and I got appointed as the Managing Director (and Board member) of an International Transport Company, based in Cameroon in French speaking West Africa; fortunately due to my stay in Switzerland I learnt to speak French which was very helpful in running a company in Cameroon for 3 years. Again, having respect for others served me well – from dealing with truck drivers to dealing with board members of the group of companies based in Sudan. Lessons learnt at Nico Malan!!
Weatherford International, a Global Oil & Gas company operating in almost 100 Countries, approached me to be their Labour Relations Manager responsible for all of Africa, followed by being transferred to Dubai as Employee Relations Manager for the whole of the Middle East and Asia Pacific and after a few years in the United Arab Emirates I was assigned as Human Resources Manager for all European Countries and Employee Relations Manager for the Eastern Hemisphere. Earlier in 2018 I was promoted to become a Global Director of Weatherford, based in Houston USA. Again, hard work and commitment played a key role, but if it was not for the values and beliefs I could rely on as a school boy at Nico Malan, my life journey would have been very different. I do not regard my life journey as achievements but see it as privileges – my foundation for my career and my life was laid between 1974 – 1978 at Nico Malan; which enabled me to have this career and to look back at memories in being fortunate to have visited more than 90 Countries worldwide.
Thank you to my Alma Mater – thank you and thank you to those teachers who taught me values in life and for believing in me to appoint me in those leadership roles in 1978. I am so proud to be one of the old boys and a very proud ex-Head Boy of Nico Malan. Carpe Diem.. Kennis Verlig
